Jack, Ella, and Theo stayed until the end of my shift, lounging in the sun. Toward the end of the day, Jack and Theo tumbled into the pool, horse-playing, laughing, and splashing each other until they got fifteen-minute restrictions from the on-duty lifeguards and had to haul their asses out of the pool with a bunch of little kids laughing and taunting them for getting in trouble.

Jack flopped on the lounger, glistening wet and breathing hard. I stayed hidden in the Snack Shack for the rest of the tour, making busywork for myself, serving sunbathers who seemed deeply disappointed I wasn't Lucas.

I sobered up, the buzzing current coming from an entirely different part of my body for the rest of the shift. I kept watching Ella, waiting for her to meet my eye, to make some gesture toward the locker rooms. I ached for it.

But she seemed entirely content to laugh and cheer the boys, or kiss on Jack, and soon enough I realized this was how she wanted it— me, in the dark, obsessively watching her every move while she preened in the sunlight. Just like she wanted all of Jack's attention, she wanted all of mine too. Maybe that's what Ella's taste test was all about. She wanted me on the verge of coming for her at all times. Fucking. Devious. Bitch.

I simmered in my own juices, starting Lucas' orders as I saw them come in on the tablet, so he could turn right around and take them out to his fan club.

I was half tempted to go back to the locker rooms and fuck myself silly. If Ella came in to try and stop me, that would be even better. But if not, at least I wouldn't feel like this. I could barely think of anything but the slide of her finger against me, that little testing push on my buzzer before she disappeared out of my pants, leaving me in freefall.

But of course, the last rational part of my brain talked sense into the rest of me. This was the real world, I couldn't beat it at my job. I mean, like any kind of crime, you could probably get away with just about anything once in a while, but if you made a habit of it, you were bound to get caught eventually.

And so long as I was thinking of Ella's touch, I should also remember Ron's irritable, Get to work! when he'd caught me all tousled up against the lockers. Someone was paying me to be here, not to rub anything out.

So maybe what I'm saying is that I had plenty of time to think about revenge. By the end of the shift, I knew what I had to do. Ella wanted to tease me into always watching her, being jealous. She'd have one more thing to embarrass me with when Jack started paying attention to me. So I decided no matter what happened, I would not touch myself. I would let her wind
